Polyphenylsulfone

polyphenylsulfone rod

Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) is an amorphous plastic that has a high glass-transition temperature and low moisture absoprtion. PPSU is a member of the polysulfone group but has better chemical resistance and better impact strength compared to Polysulfone and Polyethersulfone. Another added benefit is that PPSU can be sterilized with superheated steam repeatedly much better than other plastics in the polysulfone family. PPSU is also chemcially resistant to many cleaning solvents and disinfectants.

PPSU is an excellent choice for Engineers needing to manufacture high performance plastic components that are exposed to hot water and corrosive media due to its ability to withstand steam, gamma and ethylene oxide sterilization processes. A few common PPSU brands include ®Radel, ®Tecason, and ®Sustason to name a few.

Common applications include:

  • Battery Components
  • Medical: Various medical instrumentation due to its ability to withstand sterilization
  • Dental equipment
  • Aerospace: Various thermal and electrical insulation
